Sources and method
Where every number on this site comes from, how often we re-check it, and what we leave out on purpose.

Where the numbers come from
- Census Bureau: households with satellite, wired, cellular-only or no internet come from the American Community Survey 2025 1-year estimates, table S2801 (data.census.gov, read November 3, 2026). Rural population comes from the 2020 Census, table P2. ACS figures are survey estimates with margins of error, wider in small states.
- BEAD: state allocations from NTIA's June 26, 2023 announcement; locations by technology from NTIA's final-proposal overviews or the state broadband office, dated on each state guide. When a press report is the only source, we label it.
- Providers and co-ops: from their own websites, on the date shown.
- Starlink prices and rules: read on Starlink's help pages, its legal terms and the price data its order page loads, last checked November 2, 2026 (national price list: November 4, 2026). They are re-read at least every 30 days. Residential prices now depend on the address, so we print the national list with that warning beside it.
- Photos: public-domain government photos and Creative Commons photos, credited under each one with its license.
- Screenshots: taken by us from public pages, with the date shown.
What we leave out
- No address or ZIP lookups: we send you to the FCC map, your state's BEAD results and providers' own sites instead.
- No guessed prices, dates or speeds. Missing data stays blank rather than estimated.
- State guides go live in batches as their research is checked, not all at once.
Dates
"Facts checked" on a page is the last date its facts were re-read at the source. We don't change it unless we actually re-checked.
